Our Story

WaterLily is developed by Seaformatics, a Canadian company that specializes in hydro-power solutions for commercial and consumer markets. We are based in St. John's, NL, Canada’s windiest city, on an island in the North Atlantic ocean.

Our Mission - #EnergyAnywhere

With the WaterLily turbine, our mission is to harvest energy anywhere. Our customers require a portable power solution that allows them to safely and efficiently harvest energy wherever they are in the world.

Technology has become an important part of our interaction with the natural world. From powering research and innovation in remote areas, to connecting us with friends and family, to capturing unique moments in our lives, technology has become a essential part of our connection with nature.

At Seaformatics, we recognize that technology is important to the modern outdoor enthusiast whether it is for work, recreation, or off-grid living. We created WaterLily to ensure that no matter what reason you have for being out there you can harvest the energy you need to keep you going.

Born in the North Atlantic

The WaterLily story began in the waters of the North Atlantic. While working in the offshore, CEO Andrew Cook, was deploying equipment and collecting ocean data for various companies. The equipment ran on batteries that had to be replaced regularly. There had to be a better way.

In 2007, Cook and Dr. Masek of Memorial University began developing a power harvesting source that would power data stations without the need for batteries. They developed the SeaLily, which was able to harvest power from ocean currents.

Seaformatics Systems Inc. started out to commercialize this technology and developed a number of products that incorporated a patented water turbine that harvests power from ocean currents, a sensor interface subsystem for data collection and storage, an acoustic modem that enables data communications between units, surface buoys and cellular/satellite network.

Recharge With Nature

After 10 years and 1500 days of testing, the SeaLily was a success. The team, however, had a new idea. What if they scaled down the technology for personal use, allowing customers to harvest energy from rivers, streams, wind, and the hand crank accessory!

In 2017, WaterLily was born. After a year of development and manufacturing, the first units were shipped to customers in the spring of 2018.  Our team of engineers continues to innovate and improve the WaterLily turbine, making it easier for our customers to harvest energy everywhere.

WaterLily has been sold to over 5000 customers in more than 50 countries worldwide! The response has overwhelmingly positive with a 4.7/5 customer rating and great reviews from testers and influencers around the world.
